This week, Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced further progress on the Reform of Vocational Education (RoVE), and Registrations of Interest opened for the first Centre of Vocational Excellence.

Te Taumata Aronui

On Monday, Minister Hipkins announced the members of Taumata Aronui. A key priority of RoVE is to better recognise the needs of Māori communities and acknowledge that Māori are significant employers with social and economic goals.

To help achieve this priority, the creation of Taumata Aronui will provide Māori community and employer perspectives on tertiary education, including vocational education.

Minister Hipkins said, “Taumata Aronui will help develop our tertiary education system, including through the Reform of Vocational Education, so that it better supports the aspirations, and reflects the needs, of Māori learners, communities and employers.”

Workforce Development Councils

Six industry-led Workforce Development Councils (WDCs) will be established to provide industry with greater leadership across vocational education and training, Minister Hipkins announced on Tuesday.

The selection and make-up of the WDCs is a key decision in the Reform of Vocational Education.

“These new WDCs will ensure industry takes the lead in making sure learners develop the skills they need to be ready for the world of work,” Minister Hipkins said.

The areas of coverage for the six WDCs will be:

  • Construction and Infrastructure
  • Primary Industries
  • Service Industries
  • Health, Community and Social Services
  • Manufacturing, Engineering, Logistics and Technology, and
  • Creative, Cultural and Recreation.

Centres of Vocational Excellence

Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs) will play a significant role in driving innovation and excellence in vocational education, by strengthening links with industry and communities.

The Registration of Interest process for the Primary Sector CoVE opened on 18 December 2019.
