Provider-based: asynchronous is a new mode of delivery (mode) for online and distance learning that will come into effect from 2025.

The Minister of Education has approved the new delivery mode from 2025, Provider-based: asynchronous, under the Delivery at Levels 3–7 (non-degree) on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework and all industry training (DQ3–7) Fund.

The mode will come into effect from 2025, replacing the current Provider-based: extramural mode.

The definition of Provider-based: asynchronous is “Learners undertake supported, mainly asynchronous learning and the provider is responsible for supporting learners’ health and wellbeing”.

Thank you to the providers and other organisations who participated in the targeted consultation earlier this year on the proposed definition for the new mode.

The Tertiary Education Commission will keep providers informed as we implement the new Provider-based: asynchronous mode in the coming months.

For more information, see the Ministry of Education’s proactively released briefing on the Provider-based: asynchronous mode.
